Army, Marine Corps Participate in Norwegian Defense Forces Military Tattoo
Nine countries, 7 languages, one goal

Every other year, nearly a dozen countries send their premiere military bands to Oslo, Norway, for the country's largest indoor show, and for an opportunity to open doors previously closed by political differences.

The Norwegian Military Tattoo kicked off its 13th-year last week with military groups from the United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy and the Netherlands.

The Concert Band and Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band and the Silent Drill Platoon from Marine Barracks Washington 8th & I were the two groups invited from America this year. This was the third year the Army Field Band was invited to participate.

The weeklong tattoo included a parade and four performances by all nine countries. The Jazz Ambassadors and Concert Band of the Army Field Band performed six additional concerts throughout Norway, including a stop at the U.S. Embassy Oslo to meet Ambassador Rear Admiral Kenneth J. Braithwaite, USN (ret).

"On behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, I am immensely proud to welcome The United States Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors to Norway knowing that these premier touring jazz musicians will wow Norwegian audiences as part of the 2018 Norwegian MIlitary Tattoo," Braithwaite said. "Music is a universal language, and nothing captures people's enthusiasm like legendary American jazz!"

One of the Field Band's core responsibilities is to perform outreach missions such as this one to strengthen partnerships and broaden alliances. Through these missions, the Army remains committed to our allies and strong foreign relations, shaping the international environment and international cooperation building.

"The soldiers of The U.S. Army Field Band are honored to participate in this year's tattoo and thankful to the Norwegian Defense Ministry," said Army Field Band Commander Col. Jim Keene. "We're proud to represent America and join together with nations from around the world for the uniting purpose of peace and cooperation."

Following the tattoo's final performance Sunday, members of the Army Field Band traveled to Skien and Trondheim to perform local concerts and to meet with dignitaries and military and local officials.

"It has often been spoken of music as the great unifier in the world that brings people together to share experiences and share a community," said Oslo Mayor Marianne Borgen as she addressed the city and military units following the parade.

The Army Field Band will return to the United States this week and will begin preparations for its summer tour from upper state New York through Detroit.
