    Narration:
Yachiyo Nakazawa, the author of “Tsunami: The Stories of My Friends in Rikuzentakata,” recently visited the Camp Zama Library to present copies of her book and show her appreciation to the U.S. troops’ for their support during Operation Tomodachi recovery efforts after Japan’s 2011 earthquake.

    Interview: Yachiyo Nakazawa, Author
It took me a year to write this book in Japanese, but I also published it in a manga about two years ago because I felt that animation can sometimes describe something more softly than facts. I really wanted kids to speak about this tragic event to the next generation when they get to be adults. That’s why I decided to publish it in Manga, but at the same time, I felt I wanted more people living outside of Japan to know about this tragic event and not to forget the people who were lost during the earthquake and Tsunami. That’s how I decided to publish it in English.

    Narration:
The book is based on first-hand accounts from Ms. Nakazawa’s friends, relatives, and old classmates living in the aftermath of the (year) massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated her hometown of Rikuzentakata City, in Iwate Prefecture.

Interview: Rhonda Hunter, Director, Camp Zama DFMWR

    Interview: Yachiyo Nakazawa, Author
I want people who read my book to know that the spirit of those who lost their lives in the earthquake and Tsunami live on through the Tsunami survivors. I really want people to know how people are moving forward without their loved ones while still living in the devastated area.
