    Marine Corps Base Hawaii

U.S. Marines with 3rd Marine Regiment (3rd Marines), 3rd Marine Division, conduct a 2-mile run, a cake cutting and battle colors ceremony to commemorate Bougainville Day, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Nov. 1, 2017. Bougainville Day is the 75th anniversary of the regiment’s creation and 74th anniversary of the Battle of Bougainville. The battle happened on Nov. 1, 1943, where 3rd Marines landed at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, to establish a beachhead, fending off thousands of Imperial Japanese soldiers. Remembering the Regiment’s lineage shows the history that past warriors have created and sets a standard for other Marines to embody, while also helping to enforce mission readiness.
