185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard

Forty cadets from the United States Air Force Academy flew to Sioux City, then to Des Moines, Iowa this weekend, aboard an Iowa Air National Guard KC-135 Stratotanker from Sioux City. The cadets toured the Air Guard Facilities in the Hawkeye state as part of a partner program between the Air Force Academy and the Iowa Guard.

Before landing in Sioux City, the passengers crawled into the boom operators pod in the back of the aircraft, two by two in order to witness a mid-air refueling of several F-16 fighter aircraft.

According to the Air Force academy this is the first time they have partnered with the Air National Guard in this way. Traditionally, the academy runs a sponsor wing program hosted by only active duty wings.

After planting their feet firmly on the ground in Sioux City the group toured the facilities located at the airport where they were shown the inner workings of a typical mid-air refueling wing.

The other main objective of the trip was to introduce the soon to be commissioned officers to the National Guard, most of whom will likely be assigned to active duty units where they will initially complete a 5- 10 year commitment.

While in Sioux City the group met with members of Wing leadership, toured the boom operation simulator, the Air National Guard Paint Facility and aircraft maintenance facilities.

Before the weekend was over the Cadets traveled to the Air Guard Wing located at the Des Moines, Iowa airport. While visiting the 132nd Wing in Des Moines they were shown the remotely piloted aircraft operations and also invited to dinner with Iowa’s top commanding officer, Major Gen Tim Orr who is the Adjutant General for the state of Iowa.

Most of the members of the group are second class cadets or equivalent to juniors in college. According to the Air Force Academy the visit to Iowa allows them to see a variety of Air Force specialties before deciding on a job at the beginning of their senior year.
