LEAD IN – The Air National Guard base in Gulfport is serving as a hub for coordinating military efforts to move personnel and supplies to areas of Florida affected by Hurricane Irma.
TAKE VO – Multiple state National Guards conducting relief flights are using the CRTC-Battlefield Airmen Center as a base of operation. Since Monday there have been about a dozen trips between Gulfport and various parts of Florida. Among those involved are members of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard who flew two Chinook helicopters to Jacksonville. The unit is based out of the Eastern Pennsylvania Army Training Site and specializes in hauling cargo and in rescue operations. Nearly a dozen soldiers came directly to Gulfport from Texas where they were assisting with Hurricane Harvey. They moved food, equipment, and even hay to locations where there were stranded cattle.

Brian Young/ Pennsylvania Army National Guard I think it’s a great thing. We can come together in times of crisis and national disasters like this to really help out and make sure we get. We provide a unique capability to move lots of material, equipment and security assets to areas that have been impacted by natural disasters such as this.
TAG – National Guardsmen from Texas, Illinois, Connecticut, Missouri, and Kentucky are also conducting flights from the CRTC. Some of them are lodging on base.
