As growing numbers of Americans entered Iraq and other theaters, a number of incidents caused by miscommunication made it apparent that warfighters needed cultural training in addition to language lessons.
Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding from the US Air Force helped Los Angeles-based Alelo to shift its focus from teaching language via game-based simulation to cultural training via role-playing. The resultant web-based virtual cultural awareness training (VCAT) tool allows viewers to practice interpersonal skills in a no-risk environment. There are VCAT courses for more than 80 different countries. More than 50,000 military personnel have used VCAT training and Alelo is adapting VCAT for corporate world culture.
Alelo's VCAT is just one of many successful innovations enabled by the US Air Force’s SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. For more information, visit afsbirsttr.com.
