Military personnel from Australia and New Zealand participated in training for a massive amphibious landing that is planned for Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton as part of Exercise Talisman Saber 2017 (TS17).
The training took place at Upstart Bay, near Ayr in northern Queensland, on 8 July 2017.
With amphibious attack and support vessels HMAS Canberra, HMAS Choules, and HMNZS Canterbury anchored offshore, Australian and New Zealand landing craft made non-stop round trips to facilitate the efficient and safe loading and unloading of military vehicles onto the beach in preparation for the upcoming amphibious assault exercise.
TS17 is an Australian, United States, and New Zealand combined exercise focused on the planning and conduct of a “high end” mid intensity war fighting activity involving a Pacific theatre campaign under US Pacific Command.
Running until late July 2017, most TS17 exercises are taking place in Shoalwater Bay, but activities are also occurring in Townsville, Enoggera, Amberley and Darwin.
