The Best Sapper Competition was created in 2005 to showcase the diverse capabilities of the combat engineer, while challenging those in the field, the Best Sapper Competition continues to be a benchmark for engineers throughout the regiment. The X-Mile Run on the third and final day of this year's event started with Sappers helocasting into the lake at Training Area 250 and culminated with various Sapper obstacles on Fort Leonard Wood's Gammon Field. A rainy second day lead to some alterations in planned events but by the end of the competition Team 20, consisting of 1st Lt. Luke Groom and Staff Sgt. Carlos Jimenez from the 307th Brigade Engineer Battalion, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, earned the title of 2017 Best Sappers.
