2nd Lt. Kristen Brosseau was one of only 15 ROTC candidates nationwide in 2016 who the Air Force allowed to skip their active duty obligation. She was allowed instead to join the Air National Guard after graduating from Iowa State University reserve officer training corps last May.
She is the first person to join the Iowa Air National Guard after the completion of the AFROTC program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
The Air Force allowed her to join the Air Guard through the Air Forces Total Force Commissioning Program after she applied and was accepted for a KC-135 pilot job with the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa.
Iowa Air Guard Recruiting and retention NCO, Master Sgt. George Mendoza says because there are a limited number of applicants there are no grantees but he says it may be a doable option for people like Brosseau.
Mendoza says the guard can be a great opportunity for graduates who may prefer perusing a civilian career and staying close to home while serving part time in the National Guard.
Mendoza says the Guard is a great option but adds it is a good idea to start the process early for candidates who are considering the National Guard.
