Navy aviator Lt. Cmdr. Edward “Butch” O’Hare’s derring-do with his Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat fighter plane’s .50-caliber machine guns blazing across the Pacific Theater during World War II resulted in him becoming the Navy’s first flying ace and a Medal of Honor recipient. O’Hare’s exploits and fame are certainly noteworthy. In fact, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is named after him. But it’s where his story begins that’s truly remarkable.
