Marines and hospital corpsman with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, train in first aid and medical evacuation procedures in a battalion aid station during a field exercise aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., October 18, 2016. The purpose of the field exercise was to train the elements of the unit as one in preparation for the upcoming Marine Corps Combat readiness Evaluation. The BAS is set up in order to provide Marines on the front basic first aid. Marines train alongside Navy hospital corpsmen in first aid and practice evacuation procedures. The 1st Marine Division is employed as the ground combat element of I Marine Expeditionary Force and provides the ground combat forces necessary for ship to shore forcible entry operations.
