Today, we remember the 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers who lost their lives on this day in 1983, when a truck carrying explosives attacked the Marine compound in Beirut, Lebanon. More Marines died in that attack than in any one-day action since the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. They arrived in Beirut as part of an international peacekeeping force, not to make war.
