Modern fighter aircraft are designed to face all kinds of contingencies and among them is the possibility of an ejection. Decades of flying have left a number of hard lessons in their wake. One lesson passed on at dear cost was the specter of ejection over an ocean—it’s touchy to land in the water, release your parachute before it drags you, possibly detangle yourself from it and get into your life raft.
