During the Vietnam War on May 15, 1967, retired Army Lt. Col. Charles Kettles, who hails from Ypsilanti, Michigan, repeatedly risked his life to aid soldiers who had been ambushed and rescued 44 stranded soldiers at the Song Tra Cau riverbed in South Vietnam.
