There's a lot that goes into forging combat mobility forces. Not only do we fly the aircraft, but we have to maintain them. But who maintains the maintainers? That's where Maintenance Directorate Safety comes in and the dangers they address.
David Dresser-Environmental Protection Assistant
"Some of the things that we've done is the stands, we've changed the aircraft maintenance stands we use DOD wide. And they're just now starting to come in. It's took us a while to get this done but through OSHA and everybody coming here and working together with us, we've been able to provide a safer stand for all personnel to use throughout the military. You're X-amount of feet up in the air. If you take one trip, working on the engines, ducking under cowling rods, one slip, you're on the ground. And that's not a good place to be."
Safety directly impacts the mission. A well run safety program keeps employees on the job, saves lives and keeps operations going. To keep their safety standards high they've implemented the Voluntary Protection Program, a program that promotes effective work-site based safety and health.
James Bruce-Crew Chief:
"Since VPP has come in and we've implemented a lot of safety programs, our injury rate has gone down, our people are a lot safer, we don't have the injuries and we don't have the loss of man hours because of injuries."
And a safe mission is a mission success. For the 97th Air Mobility Wing I'm Airman James Johnson.
