NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited Kuwait to sign the NATO-Kuwait Transit Agreement, allowing the movement of NATO personnel and military equipment through Kuwait.
During his visit, Mr. Stoltenberg met the Emir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister, His Excellency Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah and the President of the Kuwait National Security Bureau, His Excellency Sheikh Thamer Ali Al-Sabah.
In addition Secretary General signed the NATO-Kuwait Transit Agreement with the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. This agreement, NATO's first in the Gulf region, allows the movement of NATO personnel and military equipment through Kuwait. He also spoke at the site of the future NATO-Kuwait Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Center.

“The center will be the hub for our cooperation. It will be an important building hosting many different kinds of activities: education, training, lectures, conferences, meetings. And that will be important for our cooperation and that is also important for our security, because the closer cooperation we have, the more we are able to learn from each other, the more able to work closer together, the more security, the more stability we are also able to create together. So this building we will an important contribution to the stability, to the security, both for the countries in the region and of NATO countries because our security, our stability is very closely linked to the stability of the whole region. So I’m so grateful for the strong commitment. I’m grateful to Kuwait and to Sheikh Thamer for pushing this project forward and making it possible that this project is now on track, that the building is under construction and I’m really looking forward to seeing the finishing of the building and then to see the activities and the different kinds of meetings, activities taking place in the new building.”
