Being in the military goes hand in hand with being fit for duty. Airman First Class Josh Crawley tells us about one group of service members who require a different kind of care.
As military members, access to support services like medical and financial assistance are perks of the job. Even Military Working Dogs get in on the benefits. While they may not need help balancing a budget, Dr. Erin Hiskett says regular medical attention is necessary to help them dog it out in one of the more demanding career fields.
Dr. Erin Hiskett, 22nd FSS Veterinarian
“These dogs are basically athletes; they spend their entire life doing an athletic job. Every single time we administer a medication or do a treatment, we always have to consider how is that going to affect their ability to do that job for the military.”
Each dog receives a yearly checkup to ensure they are fit for duty, and that any problems are taken care of right away. Dr. Hiskett adds that attending to McConnell’s canine force is a rewarding opportunity that few in the veterinary field get to see.
“I love working with the Military Working Dogs. It’s a super unique experience, definitely not one that most civilians get the opportunity to do, and we’re providing a service that is super needed and we’re making sure that the Military Working Dogs get the absolute best care that we can.”
Every dog has his day, and while a trip to the vet might not be anyone’s idea of fun, it helps ensure their best days are yet to come.
