Estonian Navy’s flagship minehunter Admiral Cowan left the port of Cartagena yesterday evening to begin the operational phase of Trident Juncture exercise near the coasts of Spain. Admiral Cowan participates in the exercise as a part of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasure Group 1.
A team of EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) divers are onboard Admiral Cowan to support ship’s mine hunting operations during the Trident Juncture 2015 exercise. EOD divers take advantage of the Mediterranean Sea’s clear waters to carry out daily exercise dives to keep their skills at high level.

We are part of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 and our main mission here is mine hunting to clear the seaways for the larger ships. Both NATO’s Mine Countermeasures Groups are taking part in this exercise. Our area of operations in this exercise will be coastal waters of Spain near port of Rota, where we will clear the way for the larger ships amphibi-ous landing operations. Without us it is not safe to approach the coasts according to the sce-nario, mines are dangerous not only to the small, but also to lager ships, civilian cruisers or warships.
