NATO exercise Trident Juncture is taking place in Italy, Spain and Portugal. At an air base in the south of Italy, the cell controlling the air assets flying in and out of the base is called LOPSCON or Local Operations Control.
The commander of LOPSCON at Trapani Air Base is French Colonel Benoît Consolini. In his normal day-to-day role, Colonel Consolini is the division head of the core Joint Force Air Component (JFAC), Allied Air Command (AIRCOM). His staff provide command and control for Allied air units in a deployed operation.
Exercise Trident Juncture involves more than 140 aircraft, 60 ships and 36,000 personnel. The exercise has been designed to test the NATO Response Force or NRF, which is a high readiness and technologically advanced force comprising of land, sea, maritime and Special Forces units capable of being deployed quickly wherever and whenever needed.
