    22nd Air Refueling Wing

Pre-deployment training gives airmen a taste of what they may encounter in a hostile location overseas, and helps keep them ready for anything that comes at them downrange. A1C Josh Crawley mobilizes with McConnell’s security forces to give us a look at the unit in action.

    Transcript:
Downrange … training can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why Senior Airman Kyle Black and other airmen of the 22nd Security Forces Squadron are in the sweltering heat of this Kansas field today. After several days of training it’s time to put their knowledge, and skill, to the test with some simulated combat.

Senior Airman Kyle Black, 22nd Security Forces Squadron Unit Trainer:
“A lot of these people they’ve never had that deployment mindset to where they’ve been in convoys, they’ve been in troop movements, how to react to contact under fire in a deployed location, also IED recognition. Stuff that they don’t necessarily see every day but they need to know what to look for when they get in those situations.”
Out here the airmen learn the importance of teamwork. For Airman Black, it was great to see a tough scenario bring the group together to overcome everything the course could throw their way.

Senior Airman Kyle Black, 22nd Security Forces Squadron Unit Trainer
“Most of the group being first time deployers and only having two or three days to come together and work together as a team they did really well. It really pushed a lot of people to step outside of their comfort zone and expand, so they did a really good job.”
The next time some of these airmen step out of that comfort zone it might well be in a place like Afghanistan and some training half a world away on the plains of Kansas will help ensure they’re ready for what awaits.
