Although largely unknown, the Pearl Harbor West Loch disaster on May 21, 1944 was the second-largest disaster at Pearl Harbor during World War II, when a fire spread through the West Loch claiming the lives of 163 Navy personnel and sinking six ships. This maritime accident took place in a Landing Ships and Tank staging area of Pearl Harbor U.S. Naval Base where vessels were being prepared for the invasion of the Japanese-held Marianas Islands classified as “Operation Forager.”
In remembrance of this event, U.S. Army Pacific and the 8th TSC will use an Army Logistics Support Vessel to transport distinguished guests across Pearl Harbor from Bishop Point to the West Loch for a military ceremony and wreath laying.
