Annual Training in the National Guard usually consists of refining the tasks and battle drills specific to a unit’s main function. In April 2015, the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Division has been given the opportunity to bring together seven of the brigade’s battalions to synchronize their various skillsets. By working through the military decision making process, staff officers from each battalion have come together to create an effective course of action.
What they are rehearsing is called a brigade Warfighter exercise. During the exercise, the brigade’s seven battalions operate in a simulated combat scenario, driving hostile invaders out of a fictional country.
While working in the Warfighter tent complex at Camp Ripley, Minn., 1st brigade tests the interoperability of its engineer, cavalry, support and three combined arms battalions. In the summer of 2016, the brigade will be tested again at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif., during a similar scenario in a desert environment. Training at NTC is usually reserved for active duty units, which shows how the 1st ABCT truly lives up to the Minnesota National Guard motto, “Always Ready.”
