NEWPORT, R.I. – Adm. John M. Richardson, director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, will deliver the graduation address to students and their guests attending the U.S. Naval War College’s (NWC) commencement ceremony scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Friday, June 20, at Naval Station Newport.
The resident graduating class includes 279 U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and civilian government employees and 94 international naval officers from 43 countries.
Countries represented include: Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Yemen.
This year, 1,145 students completed coursework through the College of Distance Education’s programs, including the NWC program at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, from 20 fleet center locations that comprise the Fleet Seminar Program, and web-enabled, CD-ROM and correspondence programs.
Depending on their program, U.S. students earn a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, or an NWC diploma. Military graduates also earn Joint Professional Military Education credit from the Department of Defense, which is essential to an officer’s professional development.
The NWC’s rigorous academic program consists of core curriculum courses from the Strategy and Policy, Joint Military Operations and National Security Affairs departments. The resident program and Fleet Seminar Program feature seminar-based coursework that promotes debate and in-depth discussion on global case studies.
Richardson assumed his duties as director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program on Nov. 2, 2012 and is responsible for overseeing the Office of Naval Reactors. The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program provides militarily effective nuclear propulsion plants and ensures their safe, reliable and long-lived operation.
