In the spring of 1944 Pearl Harbor was a very busy base. Preparations for Operation Forager, an invasion of the Japanese held Mariana (mary-ahna) Islands were in full swing. In May tragedy struck. Soldiers from the predominantly African American 29th Chemical Decontamination Company were helping load ships with ammo when a munitions explosion set off a chain reaction killing hundreds of service members and nearly all of the 29th. It is known as the West Loch (lock) Disaster. Seven decades later the sacrifices made that day were remembered in Hawaii.
