The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment won the Tennessee Best Warrior Competition for 2014 earlier this March. The competition tested the state's four major commands best junior enlisted and noncommissioned officers through a series of rigorous challenges based on common Soldier tasks.
Staff Sgt. Michael Gentry Jr. and Spc. Burton Holloway won the competition by a small margin, both with only a few points between them and second place. Their ability to show mastery of warrior skills on weapon systems, land navigation, physical fitness and military bearing set them apart from the other competitors.
The 117th Regiment, Regional Training Institute, hosted the event at the Volunteer Training Site in Smyrna, Tenn. This is the first year the R.T.I. hosted the event and is expected to support several more, including a regional competition in the upcoming years.
