CLEVELAND - Coast Guardsmen from Aids to Navigation Team Detroit and the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.,-based U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Buckthorn replace unlighted winter buoys with light summer buoys during operation Spring Restore, which concluded May 31, 2012. Operation Spring Restore involves the re-installment and verification of approximately 1,281 navigational aids, roughly half in the region, most of which are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and inclement weather.
