HONOLULU - Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island crewmembers transfer a member of the Merrell family and their pet cat from the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue system-registered cargo ship OOCL Guangzhou, approximately 10 miles south of Oahu, July 3, 2011. The Merrell family was disabled at sea after their vessel struck debris, causing them to lose steering during a trip from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to Oregon, July 1. Mr. Merrell placed a radio distress call, which was received by the crew aboard the Guangzhou. He also describes the events of his rescue and his sentiment towards the AMVER program which was integral to his family's rescue.
