ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Coast Guards newest cutter, the 418-foot National Security Cutter Waesche, will be commissioned in a ceremony on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, Friday. Waesche is the second of eight planned national security cutters. The new cutter will improve operational readiness and enable the Coast Guard to fulfill its multi-mission roles more effectively through better sea keeping, higher sustained transit speeds and greater endurance and range. The Waesche also possesses a greater ability to launch and recover small boats, helicopters and eventually unmanned aerial vehicles. Waesche is named for Coast Guard Adm. Russell R. Waesche who was the Coast Guards longest serving commandant and presided over the greatest expansion of the service in history. Marilla Waesche Pivonka, the granddaughter of Adm. Waesche, is the ships sponsor. U.S. Coast Guard video by Seaman Adam L. Stanton.
