    New London, Conn. - A woman was rescued by three off duty Coast Guard crewmembers in the Thames River near City Pier here, early this morning.

    Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a report from the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Willow that three of its crewmembers were off duty and returning to the ship when they heard splashing and a woman's cry for help at the end of City Pier.

    The crewmembers stated that a woman was in the water and struggling to fight the current and drifting away from the pier.

    The crewmembers attempted to assist the woman in the water from the pier. Soon after one crewmember decided to enter the water and was able to rescue the woman.

    The woman was transported to the local hospital for evaluation.

    She was reported to be in good condition.

    The CGC Willow crewmember that entered the water was taken to a Coast Guard medical facility for precautionary measures. He was reported to be in good condition and released back to his ship.

    The CGC Willow is a 225-foot buoy tender stationed out of Newport, R.I.
