The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen issued the following statement on the passing of Nelson Mandela:

"I convey my deepest condolences to the family of former president Nelson Mandela and to the government and the people of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela was a man of peace and a truly inspirational figure. He was a symbol of freedom, dignity and reconciliation to millions of people, irrespective of race.

His death is a loss to us all, but he leaves a lasting legacy to the whole world."
