The Coast Guard has 210 aircraft located at 24 air stations strategically placed across the United States. The Coast Guard men and women assigned to these air stations work 24/7 to ensure that the Coast Guard’s aviation assets are in peak working condition and standing by for any mission that comes their way. But how exactly does an air station maintain its constant state of readiness? That is the question we posed to Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hulser, the operations officer at Air Station Houston. Hulser graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1997 and has been flying aircraft for the Coast Guard ever since. “Just like any Coast Guard cutter, aids to navigation team or a Coast Guard base, this air station excels because of the people,” said Hulser. “From the civilians and auxiliary to our active duty Coasties, it’s the people that really make this place sing. It’s an amazing thing to watch, when we have a search and rescue launch, when we have an urgent law enforcement case or even when we are just having a morale day, these people truly love being together.
