This is a :60 PSA on the birth of Air Force Space Command. It's part of a "milestone" video series that will be released through the coming year.
The United States Air Force activated Space Command on 1 September 1982, under General James Hartinger's leadership, to assume responsibility for space related functions. An increasing number of unmanned military satellite projects reached maturity in the 1970s and 1980s. To manage these complex projects, some of which made possible verification of the arms control and nuclear test ban treaties, HQ USAF established this operational space command. It was re-designated as Air Force Space Command on Nov. 15, 1985. Also available in high definition.
