With Memorial Day on the horizon, the Arkansas National Guard recently honored those members who made the ultimate sacrifice in combat.
On Robinson Maneuver Training Center in North Little Rock, Ark., stands a memorial to all those killed in action while serving with the Arkansas National Guard and its militia predecessor.
There are 27 plaques on eight monoliths, each with a name of an Arkanansan who has died in battle. One plaque is dedicated to all Arkansas militia members who died in the Civil War.
During a yearly ceremony just before Memorial Day, each name is read and a bell rung in their honor. There are sound bites from Maj. Gen. William Wofford and Col. Franklin Powell.
