In the early hours of September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key watched the smoke clear over Fort McHenry after British warships had bombarded the fort through the night. As dawn broke, he saw that the American flag still flew. Moved by what he saw, Key began writing the words that would become our National Anthem.
That flag. That moment. That resilience under fire has echoed through two and a half centuries of American life.
On the 250th birthday year of the United States of America, the United States Army Chorus is proud to bring those words to life once more, recorded at the National Museum of the United States Army near Fort Belvoir, Virginia. From the birth of our great nation to the present day, the Museum stands as a sacred space where the story of the American Soldier, and of America itself, is honored and preserved. We are deeply grateful to the Museum for hosting this performance.
