U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, operate an Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) mounted to Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) in preparation to respond to increased drone activity near Rio Grande City, Texas, Aug. 31, 2026. The Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser is designed to track, disable, and defeat small unmanned aircraft systems. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
