U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ashley Duke, a medical-surgical nurse with 30th Medical Brigade, discusses her experience treating patients during a medical readiness exercise at Kamenge Military Hospital, Bujumbura, Burundi, Aug. 17-28, 2026. The MEDREX embedded U.S. medical personnel in a Burundian military hospital, where they treated trauma, surgical and infectious disease cases at a volume and complexity rarely seen at their home stations. The engagement built U.S. readiness, strengthened crisis response capabilities, and sharpened medical skills needed to sustain combat power.
