During a brief ceremony held at Alhambra High School in Phoenix Arizona, Lt. Col. Brandon Staub, commander of the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, presented Amanda Meyers with a commemorative coin and certificate recognizing her distinction as the year’s inaugural recruit.
As most high school seniors spent the morning of their first day adjusting backpacks and finding homerooms, Amanda Meyers was already charting the course for her future, ready to make an impact from day one.
Before starting her final year, Meyers, a senior at Alhambra High School, signed her enlistment contract to service in the U.S. Army. A decision, the Phoenix native says will begin her interest in the medical field and to help others. Meyers elected to serve as miliary occupational 68W, combat medic.
The milestone was celebrated on campus by the school’s Army Junior ROTC program, during an Oath of Enlistment ceremony conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Jackon MacDonald.
The honor did not stop there. Leadership from the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion traveled to the school to present her with an award for being the very first student to enlist in the new school year in Arizona.
Meyers is a four-year Army Junior ROTC student and serves as the unit’s operations officer and captain of numerous drill teams. Her other accolades include girls’ basketball, track and field and a straight A student.
When asked what she wants to accomplish in her final year of high school, Meyers states she wants to maintain straight As and help develop her JROTC color guard team. When asked what she wants to accomplish in her first year of Army service “I know it will be hard, but that changes us, I think I’m a good person but I’m looking forward to being a better person.”
