U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. David Franklin, fire chief with the 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air National Guard, discusses urban search and rescue training during an interview at Volk Field, Wisconsin, Aug. 26, 2026. Franklin spoke about the value of Patriot 26 in bringing together Air and Army National Guard units, CERF-P teams and civilian partners to practice technical rescue skills in a realistic disaster environment. Patriot 26 provides participants an opportunity to strengthen interoperability and prepare for complex emergency response operations. Patriot 26, an Air National Guard-hosted exercise taking place at Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center, brings together approximately 1,000 Airmen and Soldiers from National Guard units across 35 states, along with federal, state and local agencies, to enhance domestic response readiness and interagency coordination during large-scale emergencies. The scenario allows aircrews to practice locating, hoisting and evacuating simulated patients from areas where terrain or other conditions may prevent an aircraft from landing.
