U.S. Army Soldiers and industry partners test autonomous and semi-autonomous systems during Project Sandhills at Fort Bragg, N.C., in August 2026. Managed by the 20th Engineer Brigade and the Lt. Gen. James M. Gavin Joint Innovation Outpost, Sandhills integrates semi-autonomous vehicles, robotic breaching payloads, unmanned aircraft systems and counter-unmanned aircraft systems to reduce Soldier exposure during hazardous breaching operations. The experimentation places emerging technology directly into Soldiers’ hands, captures their feedback and informs future Army modernization efforts.
