Operating under the rugged, high-altitude terrain of northern Arizona, Soldiers of the Arizona National Guard’s Medical Readiness Detachment strengthened their readiness by applying fundamental Soldier skills during a demanding, scenario-driven annual training exercise, Aug. 5, 2026.
The training brought together Soldiers from the MEDDET and aircrews from the 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment, reinforcing the skills and coordination necessary to remain effective in austere environments.
The exercise focused on Warrior Tasks and other readiness requirements designed to reinforce the fundamentals that enable Soldiers to accomplish their missions under challenging conditions. For the MEDDET, that means remaining physically and mentally resilient while providing medical support in both domestic and global operations.
Operating in a remote area presented its own challenges. Distance from established infrastructure and limited logistical resources required medics to apply their training while accounting for the real-world scenario of operating in an austere environment.
The training culminated with casualty evacuation lanes supported by two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the 2-285th Aviation Regiment. Medics coordinated with aviation crews 9-line medical evacuation requests to rapidly move simulated casualties from the remote training area.
The evolution included hot-load procedures, allowing medics to transfer casualties while helicopters remained running. The process required precise communication, coordination and situational awareness between ground and aviation crews, while minimizing the aircraft’s time on the ground.
Forward deployed forces operating in a large-scale combat environment may face greater distances, constrained logistics and limited access to medical evacuation and other support. Training to operate effectively under those conditions helps build the resilience and interoperability necessary to sustain combat power.
By reinforcing fundamental combat skills, strengthening resilience and integrating ground and aviation capabilities, the training ensured Arizona Army National Guard Soldiers remain Stronger Today, Stronger Tomorrow.
