An interview with Col. Chris Ellis, U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command defense coordinating officer for Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 10, Aug. 12, 2026, near Inchelium, Wash. At the request of the National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group, located at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, U.S. Northern Command sent nearly 250 U.S. Army Soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord to support the wildland fire ground response operation in the Pacific Northwest. The Army supports the national wildland fire response by providing additional disciplined and capable hand crews to support highly trained civilian firefighters in operations that include constructing fire lines, clearing brush, and performing cleanup.
