Air tankers drop retardant on the Wood Canyon Fire in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest near Las Vegas, Nevada, Aug. 9, 2026. Aerial fire retardant coats vegetation and wildland fuels ahead of an advancing wildfire, slowing the fire's spread and lowering flame intensity to allow ground crews time and safer conditions to construct physical containment lines. After the drop, the air tankers returned to the Cedar City air tanker base to support additional wildfire suppression efforts regionally. (Forest Service video by Marc Sanchez)
