U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Earl Denham, 18th Component Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, spearheads an initiative to provide maintainers at Kadena Air Base, Japan, with custom hearing protection designed to improve communication in high-noise environments while preventing long-term hearing damage, May 14, 2026. The program uses an attenuating custom communication earpiece system, originally developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory, to enhance hearing conservation and operational effectiveness for Airmen routinely exposed to hazardous noise levels. Kadena Air Base acquired 400 headset systems and is working with the Department of the Air Force Hearing Conservation Program to evaluate their effectiveness and advocate for preventative hearing protection measures across the force.
