Snow blankets high-elevation terrain on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests in Colorado, Feb. 24, 2026. Water for the region begins as mountain snowpack before flowing down to creeks, reservoirs and irrigation systems that support communities across the Western Slope. Years of drought, insect outbreaks and fire suppression have left these forests with an abundance of living and dead trees, leaving critical watersheds vulnerable to wildfire and ecological stress.
