Cole Walters, a machine gunner with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border, patrols the U.S.-Mexico border barrier near San Diego, Calif., May 12, 2026. Marines are assisting federal authorities in monitoring the border to detect suspected illegal alien breaches and unauthorized crossings. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
