U.S. Army Lt. Col. Gene Enriquez, Vermont National Guard State Partnership Program director for Senegal, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Joe Phelan, Vermont National Guard deputy state surgeon, and U.S. Army Col. Christopher Gookin, commander of the Vermont National Guard Medical Readiness Detachment, meet with local leaders, including Mayor Ousmane Diagne, during a pre-deployment site survey and key leader engagement in Thiès, Senegal, May 1-4, 2026, ahead of planning for a multinational medical readiness exercise scheduled for 2027. Conducted during Exercise African Lion 2026 (AL26), the pre-deployment site survey and key leader engagements supported planning and coordination for a multinational medical readiness exercise, or MEDREX, scheduled for 2027 as part of the Vermont National Guard’s State Partnership Program relationships with Senegal and Austria. AL26 is U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint exercise, designed to strengthen collective security capabilities of the U.S., African nations, and global allies. Co-led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) from April 20 to May 8, 2026, and hosted in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia, AL26 involved over 5,600 personnel from more than 40 nations, using innovation to drive partner-led regional security.
