PLAA fires mix mobility and short-range firepower in the combined-arms brigades with long-range reinforcing fires from the Army Artillery Brigade. Dedicated ISR supports both massed and precision fires.
Artillery battalions of most combined-arms brigades usually have 3 122m gun batteries in direct support, a 122m MRL battery reinforcing, and an anti-tank company. The Army Artillery Brigade provides heavier and longer-range systems for reinforcing and precision fires.
In this sample brigade defense, organic SPG batteries provide close-in fire support while the MRL battery is in reserve with a counterfire element.
Assets from the Artillery Brigade provide deep precision fires on key targets.
In comparison to U.S. capabilities, the PLAA has higher density and performance – especially in automatic mortars and MRLs.
They are at a disadvantage by having 122mm at the brigade versus the U.S. 155mm. Available of precision munitions and sustainment of all types will be a challenge.
