Like most militaries, the PLAA structures operations into control zones.
The U.S. uses a Functional framework to describe what generally occurs in each area.
The anchor is the Frontier Defense Zone – with battle positions, IDF and more focused on an Annihilation Zone.
The Depth Defense Zone provides reserve and counter-attack elements, along with IDF, air other capabilities.
Flank Security prevents enemy forces from entering the battlespace undetected.
The Frontal Blocking Zone eliminates enemy recon and IDs forward elements. It also hinders attacker’s forces similar to the OPFOR Disruption Zone.
Rear Security guards against rear attacks and protects the Rear Defense Zone.
Deep Area operations prevent or hinder key capabilities from participating in the fight.
