The PLAA’s armor company is its primary tank formation, consisting of 14 main battle tanks and limited support equipment, led by a captain with a deputy, political officer, and company NCO.
Each platoon has four Main Battle Tanks and a command section including support vehicles. Each tank employs 3-man crews.
The Type-99 is the most common tank in the PLAA, although older systems may still be in use.
PLAA armor company movements and formations are significantly unique from other countries’, with columns, vees, and various wedge and echelon formations most common.
Armor companies provide high mobility and massive firepower, capitalizing on well-rehearsed battle drills.
In the offense, tank companies breach flanks and penetrate lines as the Depth Attack or Thrust Maneuver Groups.
In the defense, they may prevent penetration in the Depth Defense Group or Combat Reserve.
