Russian commanders expect multiple gap crossings during offensive operations.
Most Russian equipment can swim or at least snorkel, but specialized engineer systems like ferries, and folding or floating bridges are essential.
Crossing capabilities are mostly in a Brigade’s Engineer Battalion – in its Bridging Company and some in the Route Clearance Company
The crossing starts by destroying any defenders on the near-side.
Forward elements then conduct an amphibious assault to seize the far-side and eliminate any defenders.
The remainder of the Main Body may then cross via ferries or floating bridges.
Remember that Russian forces are well-prepared to ensure their assault doesn’t stall at a crossing on the near or far side.
